BRASS OH BRASS - it's bold and brash, a musical community, a pocket full of cash...
Much of the debut collection here at LLL, utilises this golden toned metal ... and sometimes whilst listening to the odd brass band too ;) Hand textured and then laquered with tree resin (shellac) to retain its warm hue, or coated with toxic free metal paints to add colour to your jewels, it is a stalwart lightweight material that works on many levels.
Brass has the capacity to be recycled an infinite number of times which has significant environmental and economic advantages, and even the tiniest of shavings to large mechanical components can be recycled. Brass is a copper-based alloy that does not lose its chemical or physical properties in the recycling process and it is cheaper and easier to recycle than create as a new alloy.
The one less favourable issue of using brass in eco terms at LLL, is that it is bought in from Turkey from a small independent business. We purchase it as varying shaped elements, which we then hand finish. This creates a travel carbon footprint and there is no true knowledge of each elements production values, even though we aim to support small businesses which we have achieved here. We are researching further as to how ease such issues here in the LLL studio.
